Understanding Ammonia: Fish waste, uneaten food, and decaying organic matter contribute to the production of ammonia, the primary waste product in aquariums. While invisible to the naked eye, ammonia poses a significant threat to fish health. Fortunately, beneficial bacteria in the filter break down ammonia into less toxic nitrite, ensuring a safer environment for your aquatic companions.
Correct Ammonia Level: Zero tolerance for ammonia is crucial. Maintain a level of zero mg/l (ppm) at all times to safeguard the well-being of your fish.
What to Do if Ammonia Levels Are Wrong:
- If the level is 0.2 mg/l (ppm), add a filter booster like Filter Bugs.
- For levels above 0.2 mg/l (ppm), conduct a substantial water change. Change 25% of the volume for 0.5 – 1.0 mg/l (ppm) ammonia and 50% for higher levels. Introduce Zeolite to the filter compartment to remove ammonia.
- In case of any ammonia detection, check other critical water quality parameters such as pH, KH, and nitrite.
How to Use:
- Ensure the test tube is clean.
- Collect a 5 ml water sample into the test tube.
- Add 5 drops of Ammonia 1, 5 drops of Ammonia 2, and 5 drops of Ammonia 3.
- Replace the test tube cap, shake thoroughly, and wait for 10 minutes.
- Compare the color of the sample to the provided color scale. A yellow color indicates zero ammonia, while any hint of green signals the presence of ammonia in the water.
Additional Information:
- The test kit reports concentration in terms of nitrogen (NH3-N) for compatibility with reported safe concentrations applicable to fish and plants.
- If interested in the ionic concentration, multiply the result by 1.21 (NH3-N).

- For item(s) that fit a 1kg Mail pack and do not contain liquids, the shipping cost is £5.50 + VAT.
- Bulky items such as drum or bead filters require pallet shipping, starting from £45.00 + VAT.
- Non-bulky orders to mainland UK over £1000 Excluding VAT will be shipped for free, up to a value of £55.00.
- Orders going to remote places such as the Scottish Highlands and Northern Ireland may have different rates (please contact us for details).
